The basic structure of a speech is more or less like the structure of a written essay, divided into 3 main parts: introduction, body, and conclusion. However, when conveying something verbally instead of through written words, you'll need to be more aware of your tone, body language, and word choices to really capture and hold on to your audience's attention.
Right off the bat, you will need to clarify the significance of your speech and why you need their attention. Why should the audience listen to your speech and what will your main points be? This is where you need to make an impact strong enough to make your audience want to stay and listen.
“On behalf of [company name], I would like to welcome you here today to talk about [speech topic].”
Good morning/afternoon/evening, ladies and gentlemen. My name is [name] and I am honored to be here to talk to you about [topic].
The goal today is to [purpose of the speech] and my presentation is divided into [number of speech parts] parts.
By the end of the speech, you’ll know how to…
I'll leave some time for Q&A at the end of my presentation. Feel free to let me know if you have any questions, I'll gladly answer them.
This part should take up the bulk of your speech. Your main points, ideas, and supporting evidence and additional information should be presented here to help back up your main goal of the speech.
Let's start with some general/background information on…
Before we begin, does anyone know…
Now that we're clear on…I would like to bring your attention to the next point.
As you can see from this chart/survey/research/data, we can understand how… Here are a few examples of…
Let's go back to something I mentioned earlier and let me elaborate on…
While speeches and presentations are one-way for the most part, inserting a few rhetorical questions can be extremely powerful when you want to prove or emphasize a point. It allows the audience to think instead of just listen.
What did we learn from this survey/example?
What would you do if…?
How should we have dealt with this?
What are the effects of this?
How did this happen?
The conclusion is where you should summarize the main points of your speech and recap on what you'd like to emphasize. This is the last part of your speech, it's also probably the part that will leave the strongest impression on your audience. Choose your words wisely.
If there's one thing I'd like you to remember, it's…
In conclusion, I'd like to sum up the main points…
After weighing the pros and cons, I've come to the conclusion that….
So, in the end, we analyzed the advantages and disadvantages of…
I'd like to wrap things up by going over and summarizing the key points.
It's important to always thank your audience for their time. This will ensure that you end things on a polite and good note.
This concludes my talk/speech/presentation for today and I'm more than happy to hear your comments and answer any questions.
I hope you're all a little clearer on [topic]. Thank you all for joining me here today and showing your interest in [topic].
I'd like to conclude by…
It was such a pleasure being able to talk to you all about [topic] today, thank you all for listening. Let's begin the Q&A now.
Thank you all so much for coming here today. I hope I've shone some lights on the [topic]. Are there any questions?
Asides from knowing what you want to say and the order of things, a successful speech is more than reading words off pieces of paper. Public speaking can be a frightening thing, but once you get the hang of it, it can be empowering and boost your self-confidence. Here are some tips to make your public speaking experience even more invigorating.
Know your audience. Why are they there? Are they mostly professionals, advocates, or students and people who need to be there? Knowing the type of people you'll be speaking to can help you set your tone, how formal or laid back you should be, and can help you get mentally prepared.
Whether it's a small group of 10 or a filled lecture hall, making direct eye contact will allow you to connect to your audience on a more personal level.
It might be a good idea to be more familiar with the venue that you will be speaking at. If possible, try standing in the exact spot where you'll be presenting and imagine yourself speaking with the crowd there. Walk around and take in the overall feel and vibe of the environment. This should calm you down and help reduce that stage fright.
I don't think you need me to remind you how important it is to rehearse your presentation before the big day. It'll also do you a lot of good to practice with some body language that'll help you emphasize your points and some movements to keep the audience interested. Try adding distractions (turn on the TV, or practice outdoors) to help you get ready for anything that might come up during your presentation.
If you are given any chances at speaking in front of a group of people, take it. This will not only allow you more practice before the big day, you'll also be able to find a style that works better for you.
Alright, guys. We know that public speaking is not for everyone (stupid stage fright), but it is definitely something that can help us excel professionally if we are able to do it right.
