The origin dates back centuries, with the ancient Greeks and Romans. They held annual festivities to honor the goddess Rhea, who was the wife of Cronus and mother of many other deities of Greek mythology. The Romans held spring festivals in honor of Cybele, a mother goddess. Lastly, early Christians held festivals on the fourth Sunday of Lent in honor of the Virgin Mary, Mother of Christ.
