二、易混淆 3C產品英文字彙 Frequently Confused Words

For all the tech-savvy phubbers out there, it's pertinent to know the differences between the most frequently confused tech-related words. Here’s a shortlist of the common mistakes we've collected!

對於所有精通科技的低頭族來說,有必要知道一些容易混淆的 3C產品英文用詞的區別,以下是我們所收集的常見錯誤列表!

1. A-P-P vs. app.

In Taiwan, it's common for people to mistakenly pronounce the abbreviation of "application" as "A-P-P" (spelled out), when in fact, it should be "app" (a single syllable).

在台灣,大家時常會誤以為應用程式的發音是 A-P-P(三個字母分別唸出來),而實際上發音應該是 app(單個音節)。

2. charger vs. adapter

A charger is, as its name suggests, a device that charges the power of an electronic device or batteries. An adapter converts one voltage to another.

顧名思義,充電器是為電子設備或是電池供電的設備。轉接器則是將一個電壓轉換成另一個電壓的設備。

3. laptop vs. tablet

A laptop is a portable (folded) and much lighter version of a desktop computer (which usually consists of multiple parts). Laptops are designed to be used on the user's lap, hence the name "laptop." A tablet, on the other hand, is a single flat-surface component that is typically lighter than a laptop. Think of this as a magnified smartphone with functions that are more similar to laptops rather than phones.

筆記型電腦就像是輕便版本的桌電(通常還有許多不同的組件)。筆電的設計目的是放在使用者的大腿上使用,所以才會有「laptop」這個稱呼。另一方面,平板電腦是單個平面的組件,通常也比筆電輕便許多,可將其視為放大版的智慧型手機,但功能卻又比手機更像筆電。

4. internet vs. web

Yes, there is a difference between these two. The internet is a way of allowing users to acquire data through interconnected networks. Web pages are the collections of data acquired. For example, this is a web page and you are using the internet to access this web page.

沒有錯!這兩者具有不同的意思唷。網際網路是一種讓使用者尋找資料的互連網絡工具,而網頁則是你找到而點擊進去的頁面。

例如:我們必須使用網際網路才能進入這個「Medium」網頁。

三、低頭族須知科技專有名詞與句型 Common Tech Terms & Phrases

Asides from understanding the frequently confused terms, a truly tech-savvy phubber should also become acquainted with some of the phrasal verbs and expressions to do with technology and the internet.

除了了解容易混淆的術語外,真正精通科技的低頭族也應該對技術或是網路相關用詞相當熟悉。

to be out of battery/juice (phrs. v.)

A lot of people assume that when your device stops working due to low or no battery, it's okay to say "no power." It's NOT okay. In a situation where your device has no charge left for it to work properly, you can either say it is out of battery or [the battery is] out of juice.

許多人以為,在電子設備由於電量過低或沒有電的狀態下停止運作時,英文可以說「no power」,事實上是不可以這樣使用的喔!如果你的設備沒有剩餘的電量可以正常使用,英文上的用法應該是「out of battery」,或是「the battery is out of juice」。

to browse/surf the web/internet (phrs. v.)

This is one of the most practical phrasal verbs you'll ever learn. To browse or surf the web/internet means to use the internet. To research, to scroll through different websites, to shop, to look for whatever.

這將會是你學過最實用的片語之一,這些片語都是瀏覽網際網路的意思。無論是指研究或是瀏覽不同的網站,甚至是購物以及搜尋都可以使用以上這些片語。

to scroll up/down (phrs. v.)

You know how you use the wheel on your mouse to go up and down the page? Yup, that's exactly what it means to scroll up and down, respectively.

你知道如何使用滑鼠上的滾上滾下來瀏覽頁面嗎?沒有錯,這分別就是向上和向下滾動的意思。

to back up files (phrs. v.)

Not only is this a phrase you should learn, but it's also a habit you should grow into! I think each and every one of us has had that heartbreaking experience where your computer or phone crashes and you realize you have been documenting your life for the past 2 years on that thing. And it's all gone. Just like that… So learn to back up your files, save them on to an external hard drive or the cloud to ensure you'll never lose these files!

這不僅是你需要學習的片語,也是一個必須養成的習慣!我想每個人應該都有過電腦或是手機突然當機,並突然意識到,記錄了整整兩年的生活一瞬間化為烏有,這樣驚心動魄的經驗吧?因此,請學習備份你的所有文件或是將他們儲存至硬碟或雲端上,確保你永遠不會丟失這些資料們!

to be wiped out (phrs. v.)

Another reason why you should periodically back up your files. Your device, whether mobile or not, can be prone to intrusions by ill-intended individuals and if they are skilled enough, they can wipe out all your data. That means they can erase everything. Everything.

另一個你必須定期備份檔案的原因,你的設備(無論是否是使用手機),都會有遭受惡意攻擊的可能,若這些惡意程式/駭客夠熟練的話,你的所有資料可能都會被他們清除。

pop-up ads (n.)

Sometimes, when you visit a web page, you get caught off-guard by a sudden appearance of another page on top of the page you're trying to reach. Those are called popups, and more often than not, they're advertisements for things like e-mail subscription and sales, hence the term "pop-up ads."

有時候當你瀏覽一個網頁時,你可能會突然被一個出現在網頁上的頁面嚇得措手不及,他們被稱作為彈幕。彈幕通常都是訂閱 email 或是商品打折的廣告,所以才有了彈出式廣告的這個稱號。

spam (v. / n.)

When someone gets spammed, it means they are bombarded with a large number of messages/emails that are pretty much of the same nature. Spam mails are also used to refer to the countless and useless ads and irrelevant junk mail you get in your inbox.

當一個人被「spammed」時,代表他被大量具有相同性質的郵件或是訊息轟炸。垃圾郵件還意指信箱中無數個無用的廣告,以及不相關的垃圾信件。

to get off the grid (phrs. v.)

If you're brave enough, it might do you some good to get off the grid for a few hours, a few days, or even a couple of weeks from time to time. Traditionally, when you get off the grid, it means you live a self-sustainable life and you don't rely on any public utilities. Nowadays, most people"get off the grid" by going offline on all social media accounts (yes, that means your IG, FB, twitter, LINE, you name it). You virtually disappear and become unreachable.

如果你夠勇敢,試著遠離電子設備幾個小時、幾天,甚至是幾個禮拜,對你或許會有些好處!傳統上,這個片語的意思是你過著自給自足的生活,不依賴任何的公共設施。而現今來說,當人們「get off the grid」,指的是不使用任何社群軟體,包含你的 IG , FB , Twitter , 還有 LINE ,你完全的消失在社群上,並且無法與外界保持任何聯繫。

turn on/off vs. open/close

This one is a classic mistake most people make. Just remember, when you're talking about anything electronic, you should say turn on or turn off. If you're talking about a physical opening (such as a door, window, etc.), then you may use open or close.

這是相當多人會搞混的片語,但只要記得,當我們提到電子相關的設備時,就要使用「turn on」或是「turn off」,而若提到物理上的開啟(例如:門或是窗戶),這時候就要使用 open 或是 close
